Do you remember some of the most hurtful things that have been said to or about you? Even if you’ve forgiven the offender, it is really hard to completely forget the words which can seem to echo in our minds. This is why Proverbs 18:21 warns, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

We’ve all heard the mantra that “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” In reality, words can hurt us deeply. As the Bible says, the tongue holds a lot of power. James 3 talks extensively about this little member which controls so much and can do so much damage! The good news is that life is also in the power of the tongue. This can mean, quite literally, in sharing the gospel. We cannot save anyone, but we can point to the One who does. Eternal life is often shared and explained verbally. We can use our tongues to help someone in physical danger. And more commonly, we can use them to “give life” to others in the form of loving, encouraging words. When’s the last time you were frustrated because too many people were encouraging you? Doesn’t really happen, does it? More often we can fall into a pity party of feeling like no one is encouraging us. But when you’re in that place, stop and consider when was the last time you encouraged someone? Don’t forget about the encouragers as well! We all know people who are always upbeat and always have a good word for others. They often get overlooked themselves, so be sure to share a good word with them. All it takes is a little thought, a short note, quick text, email or phone call, and you may be able to use your “tongue” to brighten someone’s day. Never underestimate the power of a good word!
