Stop and smell the roses

We were on our way to the park, my son's favourite place, but even so, he was not in a rush. He’s never in a rush. The world is very new and exciting to him. There are too many things to see and experience. He paused several times briefly, before stopping to gaze at a sprinkler. I probably wouldn’t have given it a second look. We stood there, and I couldn’t help but wonder what we gain by always rushing about so. Before he came along, I was always very busy. It had been difficult for me to halt all the activity and take on a new pace. Babies don’t really care if you’ve done anything else besides looking after them.

The limbless preacher, Nick Vujicic, describes "busy" as the acrostic “bound under Satan’s yoke”. His point was that so many Christians are busy for the sake of being busy, and they miss out on the important things. Am I too busy doing what I want to do today, that I miss the detours God wants from me? That might not be pausing to watch a sprinkler as it waters plants. But it may be stopping to say hello to someone instead of hurrying past. A smile, kind word, or helpful deed won’t cost anything, but it may be worth a lot to the one it’s offered to. We all want to do important things, but the most important thing you can do today is exactly what God wants you to do!

We are to be as little children, the Bible says. And I think we often lose our childlike wonder and trust. There’s so many things as an adult i just take for granted, things that show our Saviour’s great love for us.
