I’ll Be Happy When …

During a ladies' conference, several ladies acted out an impactful skit. The first one portrayed a young girl, longing to meet her Prince Charming. The second one was a new wife, who couldn’t wait to be a mother. The third one was a frazzled mother, anticipating the day when her children were grown and moved away! Finally, an “old lady” came and talked about how she had wished her life away.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the “when ______, then I’ll be happy.” You can fill in the blank with almost anything. The grass always looks greener on the other side of our circumstances, especially if they’re trial-some and frustrating. I often catch myself looking forward to certain milestones, knowing that’s when life will truly begin! However, when I reach them, they come with their own share of challenges and heartaches. And then I look back longingly at the past, coloured with nostalgia. Instead, God commands us to be thankful. He tells us to rejoice in the Lord always! We don’t have to wait until our circumstances change, thinking that everything else needs to change in order for us to be happy. In reality, sometimes we are the only ones who need to change — and we can find joy, right in the midst of our most trying times!
